Get Clean from Opiates with Subutex or Suboxone TreatmentsSubutex and Suboxone Help You Detox from Heroin, Painkillers and Other DrugsIf you or someone you know is dependent on opiates like prescription pain killers, methadone or heroin, Subutex and/or Suboxone can help you in the detoxification process. These two Buprenorphine products help mitigate (lessen) the painful withdrawal symptoms from stopping the long-term use of opiates. What's "Buprenorphine"?In October 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved buprenorphine product Subutex®, and a buprenorphine/naloxone combination product, Suboxone®, for use in opioid addiction treatment. The combination product reduces potential for abuse by injection. Naloxone (which counteracts opiates) was added to Suboxone to stop addicts from grinding it up if they relapse and need to abuse drugs again. Subutex® and Suboxone® are currently the only Schedule III, IV, or V medications to have received FDA approval for detoxification from opiates. Easing Withdrawal SymptomsBuprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist. In other words, although buprenorphine IS an opioid—and can produce side effects like euphoria and respiratory depression—its strongest possible effect is still less than a "full agonist" like heroin or methadone. At low doses, buprenorphine produces enough of an effect to help you discontinue opiate use without experiencing withdrawal symptoms. The effects of buprenorphine increase with larger doses of the drug until they plateau at a moderate dose. Then the effects don't increase anymore. This is the "ceiling effect" that makes buprenorphine a useful drug for rehabilitation purposes. In high doses and under certain circumstances, buprenorphine can actually block the effects of full opioid agonists (e.g. Heroin). It can even blunt withdrawal symptoms if administered to an addict while the drug of abuse is still in the bloodstream. Will This Work for Me?--Have you been diagnosed with an addiction to opiates (heroin, prescription pain killers)? At Support Systems Homes you'll be tested to make sure you'll have no bad reactions to buprenorphine treatment. Once that's assured, treatment is administered by our medical professionals. Detox is followed by a review of our treatment options. How are Subutex and Suboxone Administered?Subutex® and Suboxone are both sublingual tablets. They are placed and dissolve under the tongue. SafetyBecause of its ceiling effect, buprenorphine is a safe method of detoxification from more dangerous opiates like heroin. There is lower risk of addiction, and of respiratory depression from buprenorphine (or buprenorphine/naloxone) overdose. It IS still an opioid, so physicians must obtain special certification to prescribe buprenorphine for drug treatment. This helps increase its safety, in fact – use of Subutex or Suboxone must be monitored by specifically-qualified doctors.
